Lothar-G?nther Buchheim, 89, died a couple of
days ago. He was the author of DAS BOOT,
published in English as THE BOAT and then made
into a movie of that name, though the longer
German TV show wasn't released to the US for some
years. The start of this was a voyage Buchheim
made on U-95 with a Leica camera as a combat
photographer. He lived a full and rich life and we mourn his passing.

For those who have not read the book or viewed
his pictures or seen any version of the movie, it
can only be said that Buchheim was a visual WWII
equal to Erich Maria Remarque of First War Days
with his ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. DAS
BOOT can best be seen as a simple condemnation of
warfare, precisely as was ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.
