The oft used 'saloon' metaphor suggests a casual, open, dynamic social gathering place. The more we attempt to clamp down on precisely how we should comport in this place the more we become like other lists. In my opinion this list has special qualities. Don't tinker with something that works this well. Sure, attempt to change the subject head when you change the subject. Go off list when appropriate to do so. However, I believe that there's also something about the 'on list' expressions of gratitude and appreciation which also temper this group and allow us to believe in warmth and generosity of spirit that we have witnessed on more than one occasion. So take care when making changes to something working so very well.
