Yup.  It does, until you learn that it's mostly just social custom, 
substantive meaning approximately zero, and can usually be finessed 
without difficulty.  If the asking bothers you much (after the 
hundredth time at the same event it can get tiresome), you can 
quietly make them aware that you consider that question almost 
impardonably rude, a _serious_ faux pas, certainly not something one 
gentleperson would ask another. That way you can parry evangelism 
with Southern Courtesy, and the vast majority, who sincerely meant no 
offense, will leave you alone on the subject.

If they don't, you're dealing with serious Bible Thumpers, in which 
case it's open season with no weapons restrictions or bag limits. ;->
