Ted,

Certainly every company is trying to bury its competition - but there
are world standards in digital photography.
JPEG is one, as is TIFF, JPEG 2, MPEG, etc. Just about every digital
camera will record in JPEG and all software programs will read it.
RAW is simply the direct feed from the camera's sensor before it is
converted to JPEG or whatever. Since each manufacturer's camera line
has a unique set of components, RAW files come in many flavors.

As far as files being impossible to read because one or another
software maker has been swallowed up, the original program that you
bought has not been recalled or made inoperative. You just won't get
manufacturer's support any more. I have many pieces of equipment
which are still functional long after the manufacturer has gone out
of business. Examples: my Konica-Minolta 5400 scanner, Weston meter,
Speed Graphic, etc.

Finally, modern computer jargon is no more confusing than all that
stuff about film types, color compensation filters, developer
dilutions, color processing solution schedules, lens focal lengths,
shutter speeds etc. that you learned and repressed half a century
ago. It's just a different language.

You can teach an old dog new tricks.
