lee,

we do a fair amount of testing for archival standards. at this time, a good
rag like epson ultrasmooth or a hanamuhle rag in combination with k3 inksets
and proper archival protection (the print needs to be in its own air space
with a good uv shield or kept in an archival box)will give you or your heirs
at least 100 years. henry wilhelm regularly tests many papers and rates
their archivability. john woolf, at the museum of fine arts in boston, is
the best source for hands on practical useage and archival knowledge when it
comes to rag. he's a photographer there, but also one of the best digital
printers in the world. the high end paper companies are covetous of his and
wilhelm's advice. the guy who develped a fair amount of the current archival
wide format paper for epson, swears by premier ultrasmooth paper
(unbelievable dmax-exceeds hanamuhle rag) in combination with k3 ink.

crystal archive seems to last as long as any c material for laser printing
and machine processing. my early prints on crystal archive are without loss
of color after many years. fuji frontier machines are fairly common and
not expensive.

digital material is very good these days. there is no reason not to
partake. your ephemera will last at least as long as your grandparent's
images did.

rgds,
lennie falcon
