I am concerned about the performance issues reported by some (not not by 
others).

It could be a caching issue. Each of the large images are at least 600x480 
pixels. Maybe the perceived slowness is waiting for these to download?

For those of you reporting performance issues, can you be specific about 
what you are doing on the site and ends up annoying you?

The site is using a very popular image gallery named Coppermine so it is 
definitely something that is tried and true.
