Nothing is forever.  For instance, most motion pictures produced on 
nitrate-based film have been lost. On the other hand, I still have some 
glass plate negatives my grandfather created in the early 1900's and 
they're as good as the day he developed them.

As for digital, I feel instinctively it's ephemeral -- but it sure is fun!
