Don,

I haven't gone to the large drives, but I use an 80GB Western Digital 
external drive in essentially the manner you propose.  I store images and 
document backups on it and keep it powered down when not in actual use.  It 
works fine for me.

Because I got caught with unreadable backups when I upgraded from Win98 to 
XP, I now use a "Copy/Paste" backup routine that takes about 10 minutes each 
Saturday morning.
