Subject: [Leica] on the nature of art

That's without qoutation marks or a capitol 'A'. I'm talking about that 
activity that each person has in their life that they pursue with a sense of 
perfectionism. It can be almost anything- gardening, skiing, taxidermy, or 
possessing and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of a specialised 
field of knowledge. I'll never forget the guy I met at the edge of a 
Kentucky lake 10 years ago who told me, quite simply, that 'Fishing is my 
main thing'. I think all people have work, usually apart from their job, 
from which they pull their sense of themselves, and that people who lack 
this are already dead, and just waiting to get their tickets punched.

What has me going back to the local stock car races is that I have stumbled 
on a fairly large group of people who have a powerful and passionate 
relationship to what they are doing. These people are wholly involved, and 
there is a high level of sportsmanship. A great place to shoot!
