I'm talking about that activity that each person has in their life that they pursue with a sense of perfectionism. It can be almost anything- gardening, skiing, taxidermy, or possessing and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of a specialised field of knowledge. I'll never forget the guy I met at the edge of a Kentucky lake 10 years ago who told me, quite simply, that 'Fishing is my main thing'. I think all people have work, usually apart from their job, from which they pull their sense of themselves, and that people who lack this are already dead, and just waiting to get their tickets punched. What has me going back to the local stock car races is that I have stumbled on a fairly large group of people who have a powerful and passionate relationship to what they are doing. These people are wholly involved, and there is a high level of sportsmanship. A great place to shoot!
