I thought about this crop when I saw Walt's comments, and it's 
probably a stronger shot without the watch, but honestly, the watch 
and cap didn't bother me.  Pretty much every male I know wears a 
watch on his left wrist, so it "vanished" because the moment is so 
well-caught.  The cap... again, I'm used to it, and the tiny fingers 
at the left next to the father's big ones probably say as much about 
the relationship between the figures as the baby's head would, in a 
much subtler fashion, and since we don't see baby's head, the shot 
emphasizes the father rather than letting baby steal the shot as they 
are MOST wont to do.
