I have had my M6 is from 1985 and it meters perfectly - no tricks
needed, the partial area is just right. But as Ted says, shoot from the
shadow side.
Actually I have not shot a slide film for a year now, I shoot colour
negative film - with Leica and Rolleiflex - and have it scanned right
after development.
