I happen to work in the building next to Southeby's in NYC. A benefit is I
can drop in on auctions. This morning and afternoon I was witness to a
couple extraordinary sales. The first was Steichen's "The Pond-
Moonlight", sold for 2.928 million. Walker Evans' "Floyd Burroughs", 307
thousand, Franks' "US 285 New Mexico", 156 thousand. The bidding was fierce.

Most of the photographs sold were from the Gilman Paper Company Collection
which was recently acquired by the New York Museum of Modern Art. They
apparently are breaking up the collection which is just sad.
