You don't really need to know that to get great prints, but raster 
refers to pixels.  There are raster images made of pixels like 
digital photographs and vector images made of lines like 
drawings.  You need software to convert the raster images to 
something that the printer can print.  The software is included with 
all printers and you don't need to even think about the conversion; 
however, if you want to use specific papers and inks, you will need 
to tell the printer which papers and inks you are using.  That is all 
the RIP is -  a profile to tell the printer how to convert the raster 
(pixel) image to something it can print with the inks you choose and 
the paper you choose.  You don't need to know all of this.  Just do it!
