I think what, I believe Tina meant was, she and some of us work wide open or as close as possible to that, but still maintain a correct exposure and if it's necessary to stop down we do. Obviously if we run out of shutter speeds to maintain a correct exposure. It doesn't mean we blow frames because we create an overexposure due to not stopping down. > Can you imagine how out of focus a 400 F2.8 lens is compared to your 400 > F6.8?<<<< Well I don't know and have never given it a thought as out of focus wide open is just as out of focus as wide open on another lens. That is as far as I'm concerned, all I'm ever concerned about is that the subject is as razor blade sharp as I can get. :-) Even though I have owned and used both lenses mentioned I never considered what the background looked like. Besides working wide open as often as possible gives such a beautiful separation, subject to background, is one of the reasons I shoot in that fashion as much as I can. Unless I require great depth of field, then the wide open working method is out the window. Another and probably more important factor: I always try to shoot at the highest possible shutter speed and widest aperture possible! As it quite often eliminates or softens background clutter and allows for the possibility of a camera jiggle. I hope this explains the wide open comment, certainly from my point in using it. ted
