Sorry to jump in  the middle of this.  There is a very informative
mail list devoted to digital B&W printing that can be accessed at:

There is a general consensus that producing neutral B&W prints from
all but the latest Epson printers (the 2400, 4800 series) requires
either aftermarket inks (google the MIS website) or RIP software.
