As a development tool, it was interesting. ANd it spawned the all famoous Leica S1. Remember that fiasco? Great technology, no sales. YOu must be right to market with your produyct and your timing. Otherwise you get to shuit the doors. Frank Filippone In Osterloh's new book "50 Years Leica M" a 1980's prototype is described as what could be the basis of the digital M. Working prototypes using a M rangefinder grafted onto a R4 body with a focal plane shutter are shown. This "M6" almost made it into production.
