[Leica] photojournalist career path

i once had a long conversation with editor of the birmingham news  
about how they hire print journalists and what the career path is for  
people who end up working for regional and national papers.  he said  
usually people start out on small-town/small city papers (gadsden,  
AL, times) then the best get hired by the bigger city papers  
(birmingham news, mobile register), then the best of those move on to  
bigger cities and their papers (atlanta J-C), then, if they really  
make it to the big leagues, to the biggest city/national papers (NYT,  
wash post, LAtimes, etc).

i realize, of course, that this is not the only career pathway that  
people follow, but i wonder, does it work this way for a lot of  
photojournalists, too?
