It goes with the digital territory. As Jay pointed out, _everyone_ is 
mucking around with their RAW files. Adobe picked on Nikon because they 
can't fight back with as much clout as Canon can.

I wonder if Adobe's format, the PSD-files, are open source format that 
any maker of image processing software can use without pain?

Just save them as TIFF's or JPEG once you have the shot the way you want 
it. No big deal. The majority of our work isn't worth archiving anyway :-)

Personally, I prefer to make prints. Pretty prints. I feel secure with 
that. Not because I think they will last an eternity, but because I can 
look at them as long as I'm around. Give them to my kids, friends. 
Spread them around, rather than hide them in the bomb-shelter/garage.
