I agree John, but these departures made the in-theatre movie experience more interesting didn't they? Sure, irritating departures, but they certainly got one's attention. What I found truly fascinating, and still well done, was the number of lines that swapped from one character in the book, to another in the movie, even at completely different settings. And yet it worked. such as Grima's 'wild and trammelled thing' lines about Eowyn, which were Gandalf's lines from the Houses of Healing! Rick.
