Mission critical servers use massive HDD's (Terabytes in size) and suffer no consequences. The reliability is in the controller. Buying good quality External HDD cases is the key. The ULTRA ATA (133) is your best bet as SATA drives are technically not as reliable when used EXTERNALLY. SATA cuts down on signal corruption from adjacent wires and does not significantly increase bandwidth (ie speed). Second gen SATA will increase bandwidth when it arrives.
