i may well be cracking too many eggs at once here:

i finally got a roll of paper today and am currently in the process of 
trying to print a 13x33 inch print.  i've never actually paid attention 
before, so i must ask, does the little print manager thingie always go 
1-100% before the printing starts?  i'm running it through quadtone 
rip, so i'm thinking it ought to take forever, though i don't remember 
even 19-inch prints taking proportionally long to start printing.

FWIW, i'm on a 133mhz G4 with 1G of ram.  certainly not sufficient 
power for this, but it's what i have to work with.
