It will actually hold an 8 1/2 x11 sheet of paper. You must keep the negatives in sleeves. There is a drop down lid, heavy glass plate. It sounds like this is the proofer you have now, as the foam under the paper does disintegrate. Print File will give ( free) you new foam, but getting the old foam off the metal is nearly impossible.
