Brad, you are correct in placing the 50/1.5 summarit in 1949. Jim Lager
says
production started in that year and Leitz, in one of its 1954 brochures on
lenses, says that the No. 1,000,000 [one million] was made on oct. 24, 1952.
Ghester Sartorius says Serial Numbers for the screw-mount Summarit began
at around 682,000 and ended at around 1,725,000. Since yours is No.
740,5xx,
it appears to be an early one.
Lager says that some of the later Summarits were made in Canada from
German parts and are regarded by Sartorius as very rare. The Wetzlar
Summarits,
according to Sartorius, are common.
The M-mount Summarits, according to Sartorius, date from 1954 to 1960,
from Serial No. approx. 1,124,000 to approx. 1,820,000 and all of them are
common. Both the screw mount and the bayonet mount weigh the same -- 320
grams.

I hope that helps. regards, bob cole
