Survival. They need to fuel their glass making operations with something. Sure, they could just make lenses in M mount, but they suckered CV into doing the body for them to get hype for their lens lineup. That was gravy. If the body fails, they still have the hype ( think New Coke). OTOH, they could be just plain trying to do in Leica. A strategic strike to obtain some technology, employees, knowledge, patents, who knows? It is pretty public that Leica is financially in trouble. If Zeiss wanted to own Leica, a strike on their bottom line could be the easy way to get it. (Promising to ) Sell lenses at 1/3 off the Leica prices would have a debilitating effect on the price of Leica lenses, and also have some potential buyers hold off on their purchases of Leica glass awaiting some new Zeiss glass. Way too Machiavellian, but there are more nut cases out there than we could imagine...... Frank Filippone red735i@earthlink.net The Zeiss effort looks more and more like a marketing exercise. Seth
