It's maddening > listening to all these American athletes & entertainers inserting "Ya > know" > every 5 words...one of these days I will answer "No I don't know, will you > please explain" Canadians use "eh" which I don't find nearly as bad.<<< Hi Jon, "Ya know" ;-) In their defence, just as much in our Canadian "eh." :-) These words are learned without knowing we are saying it. It's a form of verbal re-action in speaking and I too at times get a grind on about hearing "Ya know" But not too much. :-) .... "Cool!" as a reaction to everything and anything as an exclamation. Drives me crazy even though I know I've used in writing a post, but rarely if ever in speaking . And I've caught myself at times speaking with someone and all of a sudden realized I've used "eh" on several occasions during the conversation then try to avoid using it. Only to fail miserably a few sentences along. Much like another sound use I find most annoying when there is a perfectly good English word to use or combination of words. This is the use of, I think I can type this as it sounds... "Uh Huh!" as a form of "Thank you or thanks." Absolutely annoying! :-) However, hardly worth a moment of concern given the plight of the world today. ;-) I think your idea of saying........>> I will answer "No I don't know, will you please explain" would be a beautiful response to see or hear the reaction. ;-) ted
