I think the M5 introduced black chrome to the M lineup. Starting about mid run with the M4-P, Leica switched to zinc top/bottom plates and we didn't see brass again until the M7 and MP (special editions excluded). The zinc bodies came in both silver or black chrome. There is a layer of nickel over the zinc, which protects it from corrosion and acts as a primer for the chrome.
