Ted,
Definitely not in a store, but I couldn't get around a "smidgin" of
fill-in flash to get at least a touch of anything other than dullness
into Posy's fur.
Overcast weather, very diffuse dim light, no shadows and on top of that
contre-jour - and you can't pose cats that know you, they're much too
inquisitive.

I agree wholeheartedly with your damnation of flash if the shot was a
"momentaufnahme", in fact I don't like to use flash at all unless I
consider it
to be absolutely necessary.

However, if the shot was posed, or could have been shot again with prior
planning I suggest that this may be another matter, and that the use of
flash
or, even better, reflectors could be valid.
I assume from having read the earlier mails that the store picture was
shot on the spur of the moment, so how do you get someone to pose, turn or
get into the light ? Or do you pass on this shot and wait for someone to
come in from the right direction? or in the case of Ken's shot wait until
the subject is leaving the shop - all of which goes, IMHO, against the
spontaneity of catching the moment.

Douglas
BTW thanks again for the tip about photographing flowers.
