This is an excellent way to try out something new - I do this often as well. I've been hampered by dim-light conditions for years so I recently purchased a 400mm f/2.8 lens. Either Leica lens - modular or pre-modular - is well out of my price range so I bought a well-used Canon FD L lens (delivery expected shortly). I'm not expecting it to match an APO-Telyt's performance but it ought to be pretty good and allows me to try a 400/2.8 without spending the big bucks. Later, if a 400/2.8 proves to be productive I might be able to justify an APO-Telyt. I did the same thing with 280mm lenses. I tried a few good affordable lenses before spending the big bucks on the 280 f/4 APO. Doug Herr Birdman of Sacramento http://www.wildlightphoto.com
