Google spends a lot of money trying to prevent "google" from being used as a verb. Their attorneys believe that the NPR piece mentioned was the first, but there were several at that time, including a reference in Sex and the City, the first on mainstream television. Every time any business uses the name "Google" incorrectly, they get a letter from one of Google's attorneys asking them to stop doing this. Trademark law is fairly specific about how Google must behave in order to keep its trademark from slipping into the public domain. Imagine if Microsoft could offer "googling by Microsoft: it's much better than the other brands"
