I was pleasantly surprised at the huge turnout of enthusiastic fans. I saw the crowd only in the vicinity of the starting line at the Ferry Building; the local TV coverage showed crowds all along the challenging route which included some of our steepest hills. Lace Armstrong withdrew at the last moment because of an injury. This race wasn't merely an event, it was an EVENT, complete with nearly 100 booths displaying and selling everything from bicycle hardware to sports drinks, power food, and of course bicycle fashions. The pro photographers were uniformly weighed down with huge lenses attached to camera-like contraptions with umbilicals connected to god knows what hung from their belts, arms, and backs. I posted a few snapshots, made on Agfa Optima 200 with M6, Summicron 35mm and Elmarit 24mm at: http://gallery.leica-users.org/OliverBrykPhotos/SFProRace01
