Fakes are common..... There was a time when you neeed to go through some
really tough hoops to get a top cover plate replaced.... But I have heard
that during one ( of many ) house cleanings of old equipment in Leica, that
the engraving machines and dies were sold. To change the serial number of a
camera, yuou only need a blank top plate and one of these machines. Yes,
there may be a hidden place where Leica puts the serial number, hidden from
view, but to the average collector, he will not have the skill to get to
that number.... and a fake is born. Top plates are commonly available
through eBay. No big deal....except if you collect the cameras, and are
willing to pay a premium for a rare serial number.

Commn fakes..... Eisenhower M3, QE2 M3, Stereo Leica ( I have seen this one
myself, made in Britain by a really talented restoration repairman) ....
anyone want to add more?

Was there ever a book on Leica fakes?
