I remember very vividly that in about 1966, the best vacuum tubes ever made 
were produced by RCA and Raytheon and GE. Their quality in electronic 
devices was breathtaking.

I was a college freshman at the time, studying physics and electrical 
engineering. There were these piece-of-crap transistors like the 2N107 
trying to compete with gorgeous top-of-the-line vacuum tubes like the 6AU7. 
No contest.

My parents didn't understand the value of my vacuum tube collection and 
threw it away while I was away at college. They missed one 7C24 tube, which 
I still have, and it's as beautiful a lump of glass as you can imagine.

Sigh.
