Our group studies the economies of the countries we visit and usually have an economist and human rights person come to speak to the group while we are in the country. We also do our small part by buying organic coffee directly from the HPI farmers and bringing cases of it back to sell in our presbytery. We also buy handicrafts directly from the craftspeople and bring those back to sell, too. The profits are returned to the co-operatives in Honduras and Guatemala. I know that what we do is just a drop in the bucket, but it does make a difference in a few lives. We meet with our congressman, John Spratt, regularly. He is a Presbyterian and member of our presbytery and has been interested in going on the trips with us, but he's afraid his presence would be a distraction so he depends on us to come back and tell him what's going on in Central America from our perspective. He has been a big supporter of fair trade programs. Thanks for caring! Tina Tina Manley, ASMP www.tinamanley.com
