It doesn't stop everyone from taking a dip but other factors also have an effect: a) when the tide out it is a hike to reach the water and it's only a few inches deep when you get there. b) the weather forecast for the day was lousy so the number of visitors were down. c) there was some sort of carnival on in the town. I remember years back my youngest son was waist high in the water about 20 yards out and he shouted that there were jelly fish about. I had those little white ones in mind about the size of a thimble which are quite common so I told him not to worry. A few moments later I saw one washed up on the beach about the size of a plate and patterned in various shades of brown. I looked around and they were everywhere. Cue 'Psycho' shower scene music in my head and Roy Sheider 'Jaws' expression on my face :-) We got him out of there real quick and no harm was done (they were probably harmless anyway) but it was never the same again for my family.
