Passing along from Rusty Kennedy's conversation Saturday with Sal's brother, Joe, who is his only surviving relative: Sal felt ill Saturday morning, called 911 for help, and died about 2 p.m. at a local hospital. He had not reported being ill before the event, and his death is listed as "natural causes." He had been planning to attend memorial services Sunday for fellow photojournalist George Reynolds. He is a graduate of the Temple University School of Journalism. Sal was taught photography by his father, a portrait photographer in Philadelphia, PA. DiMarco joined the staff of the "Philadelphia Evening & Sunday Bulletin" in 1967 as a summer intern. While completing his education, he was made a full-time staff photographer, later he was promoted to assistant picture editor/photographer. Finally, he was promoted to Chief Photographer, where he ran a department of thirty photographers, editors and technicians. He held the position until the paper ceased publication in 1982. After the newspaper folded, he became a full-time free lancer, dividing his time between editorial, corporate, and industrial magazine assignments.
