I think this is unnecessary paranoia. I have happily walked around London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Madrid, New York, Tel Aviv, Milan, Rome, Paris etc. etc. with my Domke 803 containing 2 M bodies, a VC R body, and four or five lenses. You obviously have to use common sense, but if you are so scared of using your Leicas, then what is the point of owning them? Sure, you can be a victim of theft anywhere, which I why I have a rider covering my photo equipment as part of my homeowners insurance (and yes, it also covers the stuff when I am travelling). For a non-professional this kind of cover is pretty inexpensive.
