I buy little padded lens carriers from the likes of Lowepro and Domke, and put the lenses in there. Certainly more expensive than loaves of bread, but last a lot longer, and I don't have to worry about pigeons. Only downside is that I cannot have an impromptu snack on the run when I get hungry. In which case, the pigeons may have to worry about me. A knapsack with a T-short or sweater tossed in does it for me 90% of the time. The other 90% of the time, I just go bagless.
