The Asph sets it forward a couple mm's and works much more nicely. That said, the pre-asph is the lens that made me see what they were talking about regarding bokeh - nice smooth out of focus areas that are still intelligible, just not as crisp. You also have to consider the weight of the body when calculating weight reduction percentages. An M6TTL clocks in at 600 grams. Therefore: body + Asph 910 gm body + pre-Asph (early) 845 gm 92% of body + Asph body + pre- Asph (late) 795 gm 87% of body + Asph Though risking accusations of single-mindedness and repetition, I have to say again that you just need to lose the Asph shade to get a small compact lens.
