I just spoke with a friend who knows a great deal more "Beat" (a term hated by the so-called Beats) minutiae than I do, who says that Ginsburg came on his Leica later in his photographic career, perhaps his last eight or nine years. She doesn't know where he got the Retina so you are probably also correct about its provenance...I was only guessing at the Burroughs connection.
