There are two places in Guatemala I loved, the first is the Lake Atitlan area, there are wonderful Mayan villages in the mountains. The second is Tikal, and nearby Flores. I spent a month in the highlands outside Antigua. Don't be shy about hiring armed guard, their easily available for cheap.
