Because the SF-20's TTL flash metering does not "read" the whole frame 
and because it is not that powerful, auto actually works quite well 
indeed. Subjects are generally at similar distances and placements. If 
you stick a subject on the edge of the frame, it isn't going to work 
very well in TTL.

Whether you have to cut back on the light depends on the film used and 
the desired look. I use slide film in TTL less a stop in both the 
ambient and flash. The main subject gets a double dose of light and 
stands out nicely from a slightly subdued background. Different effects 
and films will require different settings. If you are just opening up 
the eyes a little with print film then I wouldn't knock back the 
ambient at all. TTL flash is very helpful but it does not replace the 
need to think and plan.
