This is not really a good test for a fast lens as only a real dog of a lens won't deliver in the middle. Also, the true test of a really superb lens is how it handles really fine detail, what it does in veiling flare situation, and last how much field curvature the lens exhibits. One of the advances of newer designs over fast lenses from earlier times is the use of aspheric elements to flatten the field, bring up edge sharpness, and reduce vignetting. I suspect that wide open the Nokton will show a fairly even sharpness out to the outer zones with relatively low vignetting. As to the DR, it is quite simply superb from 2.8. At F2 the edges of the frame are not crisp and flare is something that you have to plan around. Also, by modern standards the contrast it exhibits is somewhat flat. Many people who test the DR haven't had it CLA'd and so get results that do not reflect the true abilities of the design. One of the things that sadden me about the rush into digital is the loss of all the older lenses and their unique fingerprints. In the M system you can reach back almost the proverbial four score years for interesting effects on film. I have not done any wonderful theoretical and optic test but i would want to tell my experiences. Sometimes (probably and middle apertures) the pictures are sharp and contrasted but in other conditions the lens is a litlle bit soft. This picture is an example: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1868446&size=lg Low contrast (to me), good sharpness (to me) and nice bokeh (to me). Gray tones are nice (to me). Is it comparable to DR summicron pictures. Excuse my ignorance. Any opinions will be wellcome, Rafael - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html - -- To unsubscribe, see http://mejac.palo-alto.ca.us/leica-users/unsub.html
