Well, I'll bite: I like Helmut -- he's almost Australian ;-) There are
many types of graphic work done in the world, and not everyone will
appreciate every kind. Clearly AL and HN have distinctive "commercial"
styles, designed to attract/surprise the eye, and to this end, both are
very adept. You can add a number of others to this list: the one who
does the dogs, the one who does the babies. Niche markets, often found
on greeting cards.

My greeting cards often have images of beautiful flowers. Those to get
them often remark how beautiful they are: true the flowers are
beautiful, and on occasion, I've managed to make something of them
which is just a little different -- but often its because I own
equipment that my friends don't have access to, and I have the interest
and time to go out and DO IT. Now to be quite honest, I'd love to try
Newtonesque greeting cards. I think it would be fun, but for some
reason my house is teeming with flowers, not models ;-)

That said, I can understand why people would not want to pay $3000
dollars for an HN book. I understand that his images are contrived, and
I prefer some of the documentary "honesty" shown in this years
selection of FOM2 or shown by many photojournalists: when one of these,
combines the ability to see life and put it in an artistic frame, then
these are the photographers whom I most admire. I will name one, who to
me became a photojournalist, but never lost his "commercial" eye for
design composition and art: Werner Bishof, but of course there are many
others, and some of them are "Here".

Cheers
