The next generation naval gun will be able to shoot a 5" projectile about 100 miles using a rocket assist. Coupled with GPS guidance and some spiffy software a vessel wil be able to shoot at the approximate area of a target and have the coordinates updated while the projectile is inflight. These kinds of projectiles are also good for hitting hardened targets because they come down at a very steep angle of attack. I'm fairly sure these were written up in the most recent copy of the "Naval Institute Proceedings". Not as exciting to see shoot as a 16" gun though.
