It's the tranquil background that sets the mood for this shot. Contrasting pastels adds to the tenderness and softness appropriate to the subjects. The gentle sea wind combs the hair of mother and child in the same direction. Even the child's white sweater reflects a fill light between them. The child seems to be enjoying complete security. And the mother is aware of the miracle she is holding. Both are at the start of a mutual journey.
