At the end of WW II, Stalin ceded to Mao that area of China that the USSR controlled. Remember, Zhukov defeated the Japanese when they tried to invade the Russian far eastern provinces during the 30s. This same Zhukov was given the top job at the Soviet high command (STAVKA) in the war against Nazi Germany during which he summoned all his best fellow generals who proved themselves in the far east campaigns, like Rokossovski to settle the Nazis hash. So Stalin owned a lot of Chinese territory after WW II. He may have regretted turning this territory and arms over to Mao later, but it was too late for second thoughts. Mao had the arms to flatten the US supported Nationalists in short order. All this history is on the Net.
