I think of it as like Mac OSX without all the fluff. All that being said there are still some difficulties. You have to be able to fiddle with things under the hood a bit. Sure the good Linux distributions run pretty much flawlessly out of the box but sometimes you run into challenges upgrading things or using certain hardware. Most of these can be solved but again you have to tinker. My scanner only works with Vuescan under Linux, but that is no hardship since Vuescan produces much better scans than the stock drivers even under Windows it is worth the price. My printer, a Canon I950, is another matter. Standard stuff is fine, but I still can't get decent photo quality prints under Linux. Nobody has written the drivers yet. The Linux printer drivers out there have the source code available. Unfortunately I have to get a bit smarter before I can cipher out the code well enough to make it do what I want. I've happily used Windows, Linux, and Mac for a variety of applications. If I had to buy a computer for full-time serious photographic use I would probably buy a Mac because Photoshop works without a fuss and you can interface with most of the hardware I would care to use. That being said, I am getting a killer Windows box at work for media production use. Its easier for now to continue using the applications that I am used to, and I really don't believe the claims about the performance of the G5. Bottom line: They all work.
