There is no electrical linkage so there is actual aperture metering only so it works in aperture priority or manual modes (shutter priority would require the camera to be able to stop the lens down to the appropriate aperture on exposure which it clearly can not do). I often use my Canon lenses in manual focus mode anyway so the loss of autofocus is no problem. I find limited use for macro because stopped down it is difficult to focus and it is too difficult in very close, minimal depth of field, situations to compose wide open and stop down manually without moving too much for this situation. The telephotos I use wide open anyway.
