Many times a photo must be cropped pretty severely, so the larger the file the better. And who knows when you'll need a four or five column vertical photo. Newspaper reproduction is much better than it used to be at many papers. And the better the image, the more flexible it is for cropping or other adjustments. One time I had to chase down a butterfly which was migrating through the area. The only way to get it was with my 70-180 2.8 Vario APO. They were skittish little critters. I couldn't get very close to it. And so I had to crop extremely into the frame. And it ran pretty large. So lots of info in the negative paid off.
