As other people have mentioned, the filter factors for
standard black and white filters are easy to calculate.
However, if you like to use the M with a polarizer for
partial to full polarization, the through the lens meter is
wonderful.  It is even more wonderful if, like myself, you
enjoy attaching a visoflex and bellows to the M to do macro
photography.  It is truly liberating to not have to do
manual calculations of effective aperture.
